One of my hiring managers (CEO of a successful construction company located in St. Louis, MO) has asked me to help him find a Chief Financial Officer who is ready to take his game to the next level. Position Summary

The Chief Financial Officer will lead and develop an internal team to support finance, budgeting and business planning.

Responsibilities

  • Forge positive relationships with business unit leaders, so that new opportunities may be fully evaluated, current strategies challenged, revenues maximized, and costs appropriately managed

  • Manage staff of five direct reports. Includes setting of objectives and performance/compensation reviews

  • Interpret and analyze financial statements, sales reports and other data to pinpoint areas of opportunity or where budgets/plans are not being met, and then meet with relevant stakeholders to co-author plans to improve

  • Oversee forecasted monthly P&L, cash flow and balance sheet – for the current calendar year and rolling 12 months

  • Read, understand and implement a variety of contracts and agreements; identify areas of risk and establish/negotiate deal points

  • Establish and maintain an effective purchasing and payables process to ensure proper approval, receipt of goods, and payment of vendor-partners

  • Detail monthly review of royalty reports

  • Lead budget process and manage business to achieve budget objectives

  • Lead and manage traditional financial responsibilities:

  • Bank relationship

  • Manage property and casualty insurance

  • Manage group insurance in partnership with Human Resources team

  • Financial analysis

  • Formalize capital expenditure planning

  • Overall responsibility for annual audit and for maintaining on-going dialog with auditors

  • Collaborate with internal teams on ERP selection and implementation

  • Participating in disaster recovery planning

Requirements

Professional Requirements

  • A financial leader with 4+ years of experience. An energetic, forward-thinking and creative individual with high ethical standards.

  • A mix of public accounting/industry experience preferred.

  • Experience directly supervising a team of individuals.

  • A well-organized and self-directed individual who is a team player.

  • Exhibits well-developed communication skills; is clear, concise, motivating and persuasive. Is also a good listener and shows an interest in what others have to say.

  • An excellent negotiator who is experienced in contracts.

  • Expert at Excel (to build forecast model), including charts and graphs.

Personal Requirements

  • Ability to move back and forth between detail tasks and broad strategy decisions (and everything in between), often in the same day.

  • Ability to multi-task, deal with interruptions and frequently change priorities.

  • Desire to proactively seek out and build meaningful relationships with business unit leaders to improve revenues, implement efficiency improvements, and set strategy.

  • Ability to adapt communication/presentation style to fit the relevant audience, which will vary significantly from day-to-day. This will include direct feedback regarding changes needed in this area, and the successful candidate must demonstrate a willingness to accept constructive feedback and make needed changes.

  • High sensitivity to maintaining confidential information.

  • High value on leadership by example, where no task is beneath them.

  • Understanding that individual priorities and desires take a back seat to customer needs and overall company goals.

Educational Requirements

  • BA/BS Degree in Accounting and CPA strongly desired.

Organizational Relationships

Reports to the Chairman. Manages and directs staff of 5 direct reports and interfaces with other departmental managers of the organization.
